Literacy
Alignment

All of my lessons, labs, and activites are aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards. These Standards are included in lesson plans, and content and language objectives are posted on the board and introduced during each class period.

Students are given many opportunities to demonstrate and improve their literacy in my classroom. From the first day of the year, students are engaged in learning Scientific Literacy, which is practiced throughout the year in inquiry-based lab reports and current event assignments that allow students to critically analyze scientific media. Students also practice 21st century digital literacy skills by completing assignments online and using various technology tools.

Students access content through a variety of methods. Through inquiry, students are able to develop questions, form predictions, design investigations, analyze and interpret data, construct and communicate explanations and critique the explanations of others.

Students in the biology classroom are frequently met with opportunities to incorporate numeracy into their assignments. Students are exposed to probability through genetics lessons and collect data in data tables that they create, as well as analyzing and graphing their data from various lab activities.

Connectedness
Relevance

Through formative assessments, like think, pair, share and group whiteboards, students make and revisit interconnections among concepts and disciplines thoughout biology to gradually build an overall, big picture of the subject.

Through formative assessments, like a whiteboard gallery walk, students can share their pre-existing ideas and experiences regarding different biology concepts. Students are encouraged to make connections between course content and their lives, such as sports. Students are also told about specific science careers that relate to what we are studying.
